About Me

Cotons of Whispering Lane
Welcome to Cotons of Whispering Lane, home to the enchanting and whimisical Coton De Tulear. Whispering Lane's breeding program is the effort of two sisters, Joyce Myers and Melinda Amsden, whose goal is to produce healthy puppies of sound structure and excellent temperament for your companionship. We are not a kennel. Our dogs are truly members of our family.

What Will I Need for My Puppy?

Many prospective puppy owners ask us what should they buy to prepare for their new addition. There are so many great products out there that the list could get lengthy when you go from needs to wants. We like to try to pair down the list to needs to start.

Every Whispering Lane puppy goes home with a goodie bag that contains some grooming essentials such as combs, pin brush, slicker, grooming spray, shampoo and conditioner. Some other items include a small bag of puppy food, harness and leash. These items will help you get started but it is highly recommended that you purchase a small to medium sized crate or kennel to transport your new puppy in the car and also provide your new puppy with a place to sleep at night. Oh and don't forget the puppy proofing items we mentioned in Preparing Your House for Your Puppy like gates and ex-pens.

Some other grooming essentials include ear wash and powder to keep little ears clean and dry, doggie toothpaste (no human toothpaste please) and toothbrush to prevent cavities and tartar build up, nail clippers and stypic powder for those little oopsies. If you plan on regular bathing yourself I highly recommend a hair dryer such as the Metro Quick Draw or Metro Cadet Pet Dryer which provides a high velocity drying power but with little or no heat. Both are very reasonably priced. A MatZapper or a dematting comb are great ideas for when your puppy starts to grow in their adult coat. Don't forget the fun things like toys... rubber balls, squeaky toys, and interactive toys that will keep your puppy busy for hours and help to prevent bad behavior from teething and boredom.

Schedule your puppy's first vet appointment within several days of his arrival to your new home and look for great training programs such as Puppy Kindergarten in your local area.

Oh one more thing...don't forget to save up plenty of hugs and kisses. Puppies loved to be loved!

Preparing Your House for Your New Puppy

Many of you are anxiously waiting for the day when you can bring your new puppy home but have you given any thought to puppy proofing your house? There could be potential dangers lerking for your new arrival if you do not plan carefully. Your new little companion will arrive at your house ready to explore and it is important to create a safe environment so they can do that safely. It is always a good idea to find a place in your house to confine your puppy such a kitchen, special room or an ex-pen for those times you get busy and can not properly watch your puppy. Secure baby gates at doorways and equip that area with a place for food and water, interesting toys, etc. to keep your puppy occupied. The best way to look for potential dangers in your house is get down on your hands and knees and look from your puppy's prospective. Things that hang and dangle should be removed. Your favorite family heirlooms should be tucked away for the time being. Tempting electrical cords should be kept out of reach or wrapped with heavy duty tubing to prevent puppies from chewing through cords. Check with poison control to make sure those beautiful household plants do not hold a poisoning danger. Find a home for any small children's toys that might present a choking danger if left laying around in the house. Just taking a little time to check your house from top to bottom will pay dividends in helping your puppy stay safe. Oh by the way, while you are searching look for a nice quiet place for your puppy to retreat after a busy day of exploring. Tuck a compfy bed or crate in this area. This will become his or her safe haven from the hussle and bussle of daily activities.
